Multiple Deaths Averted as University of Benin Teaching Hospital Ward Razed by Fire By Uduonu Ekezie

The Neuro Surgery ward of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital was yesterday razed by fire which emanated from electrical source in one of the doctor's offices. 
 
The fire which started around 7 pm from one office immediately spread through the electrical wires on the roof to the whole ward covering the entire ward with thick smoke.
 
The neuro surgery ward, a ward where mostly patients with traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury were been treated had over 30 patients on admission as at the time of the incident.
 
This Medicalworldnigeria reporter, who happened to be around the ward when the fire started joined others in the evacuation of patients to safety, as most patients in the ward are bed ridden and cannot walk. The ward Consultant, Dr. Udoh was also on ground and helped in the evacuation of patients to safety.
 
The fire was successfully brought under control by the joint efforts of the UBTH, UNIBEN and Edo state fire service after all the patients were evacuated.
 
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Mic Ibadin who was at the scene of the incident has ordered full investigation into the incident.
