Nigeria is Talking bold Steps to ensure local Treatement of cancer as the National Assembly is planning a legislation that would strengthen the nation's capacity to checkmate the ailment locally.
In the Direction too, the Federal Government too the Federal Government has commenced the process of converting the National Cancer Control Programme into the National Agency for Cancer Control.
The Agency is expected to provide needed leadership and technical direction for Cancer Control in Nigeria. It is would also be required to be a multidisciplinary Centre involving all Health care Personnel, Basic and Social scientists including public Health experts and would focus on policy formulation, advocacy and monilization and be a centre of excellence for cancer prevention, care and palliation. Minister of health Prof. Isaac, Adewole, who revealed this at an event to mark the 2016 World cancer Day in Abuja Yesterday added that government has decleared cancer as one the priority project in the health sector.
Adewole announced that the the Federal Government has initiated the planning process that would culminate in the transformation of the National Cancer Control Programme into a National Agency.
Meanwhile a consultant surgeon at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) Dr Usman Bello has called on the federal and state governments to include cancer disease in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
He made' the call at the 2016 World Cancer Day, tagged "We can, I can," which took place at Murtala Mohammed Library, Kano, stressing that NHIS scheme intervention was highly needed in that respect.
"We need to integrate cancer diseases in NHIS programme. Because if a beneficiary of the scheme has cancer problem and doesn't have the money needed for its treatment, does it simply means one should just go and die," he asked rhetorically.
