The National Agency for the Control of Aids (NACA) has conducted free medical services and HIV test for over 7000 people in Mpape area of the Buhari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.
The four-day medical outreach, which began Monday at the Central Primary School premises Mpape witnessed a large turnout of community members who turned out to receive HIV test and diagnose for other ailment.
The Senior Prevention Officer NACA, Mrs. Kadahaene Eyo, noted that free medical services was part of the agency’s medical outreach programme ‘Getting to Zero’ and at the same time providing HIV Counseling and Testing (HCT) for people and also diagnosis and treatment of other ailments.
She said free medical drugs were provided for people while pregnant women and nursing mothers were provided with free mosquito nets in addition to free condoms were being distributed to people.
She further disclosed that NACA in partnership with the federal government through SURE-P provided the free medical services to Mpape community to improve their general well being following the high population in the area and the prevalence rate. The Representative of the Executive Director Center for Health Education, Economic Rehabilitation and Social Security (CHEERS), Mr.Walter Ugwuocha noted that the NGO had partnered with NACA in an effort to bring medical services to the doorsteps of the community.
He maintained that the outreach programme provided an opportunity to reach out to people living in the community, as many of the beneficiaries do not have the money to go to hospital and seek for medical attention.
“It was an avenue to reach out to the people, by moving the services from the hospital to them and we have a component of medical personnel, the Doctor, the Nurse, Laboratory Scientist, pharmacist coming in to provide service for the people at a place most convenient for them.”
Ugwocha noted that the medical outreach had helped identify some of the people who had high blood pressure, blood sugar among other ailments while they have been able to refer pregnant women who are yet to register for antenatal services to appropriate facilities.
He noted that their aim is to improve the well being of the community members and ensure that people are aware and sure of their health status “knowing that a healthy nation is a wealthy nation, and one of the cardinal point of Cheers was to see communities where people are healthier and happier. With the support of NACA, we hope to take these services to other states to ensure that general population are covered, ” he said.
