In efforts to ensure eradication of fake agrochemical on crops, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) held a three-day workshop with pesticide and agrochemicals dealers in Kano.

 

Director General, NAFDAC, Prof. Christianah Moji Adeyeye, who was represented by Director Veterinary Medicine and Allied programme, Dr. Bukar Usman Ali, said that as protection plays a great role in the agricultural value chain to prevent and reduce losses due to pest infection and to improve crop yield.

 

Adeyeye noted this at the sensitisation workshop jointly organised by NAFDAC and Kano State Pesticide Agrochemical Dealers and CropLife Nigeria.

He said household pesticides are primarily used for indoor purposes to kill insects such as flies, cockroach and mosquitoes. “It is important to note the only insecticide products to be use indoor are ready to use sprays dust or baits specifically marketed for in house use,” he noted.

 

He said that as the demand of food becomes greater, the profits to be made by unscrupulous importers and dealers in fake agrochemicals increases, adding that the neglect of good warehouse practice both accidental and deliberate, drives the circulation of substandard CCP.

 

The DG said the sale of fake products pose a threat to health, environment and profit-margin of farmers but also to consumers and anyone handling the products.

 

He noted that the agency, along with relevant stakeholders, are taking the initiative to ensure safe use of pesticides any agrochemicals in the country through stakeholders’ awareness campaign and the institution of regulatory measures to effectively avert the dangers associated with it.
