The Association of Industrial Pharmacists of Nigeria (NAIP) and the Nigeria Association of Pharmacists in Academia (NAPA) are poised to form an alliance that will focus on translating research conducted by NAPA members to commercially viable outputs that the pharmaceutical industry can use.
This was revealed by leaders of the two technical arms of the Pharmaceuticals Society of Nigeria (PSN), while speaking at a full-day business meeting held at Pharmacy House, Anthony, Lagos.
The leaders pledged to work together on new partnership initiatives that will result in local production of essential medicines and further enhance national development.

Speaking at the meeting, Pharm. Ignatius K. Anukwu, national chairman, NAIP, lauded the current NAPA executives for seeking a renewed working relationship with other technical arms of the PSN, adding that the NAIP was equally desirous of a fruitful working relationship with NAPA. The NAIP boss recalled how the association in the past had instituted and awarded research grants to pharmacists in academia, but noted that the research results obtained so far had not translated to commercially viable products. This, he said, prompted the new focus on more product-driven research to help reduce the nation’s heavy dependence on imported finished products which potentially compromises national drug security.
He assured NAPA members that NAIP already had a budget in place to support the new initiative.
The NAIP boss also sought the collaboration of NAPA for continuous training and certification of medical representatives, the scope of which he said, could be extended to prospective employees, such as pharmacist youth corp members and other non-sales NAIP members.
The training, he said, would specifically be tailored to keep trainees abreast of trends of pharmacology of drugs in the market and obtain certification on the subject.
Prof. Emeje tasks pharmacists on the development of partnership models
Also speaking at the meeting, Prof. Martins Emeje disclosed how PMG-MAN and PSN provided the seed money used to establish the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research Development (NIPRD) and wondered why current players in the pharmaceutical industry and academia were not supporting such progressive model they inherited from the forefathers of the pharmacy profession.
While challenging the present generation of pharmacists to develop new models for partnership, Emeje charged the current NAPA and NAIP leadership to set a good example for other technical arms of the PSN on how to work in synergy to achieve set targets.
The NAIP and NAPA leaderships after the full-day meeting made a study tour of two prestigious pharmaceutical companies, Phamatex Industries Limited and Drugfield Pharmaceuticals Limited, and held fruitful deliberations with the management of the companies, who pledged to key into the NAPA-NAIP collaboration.
