Niger State chapter of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives, {NANNM} has raised an alarm over dearth of manpower in the State’s healthcare system and called for prompt intervention of the State government to address the issue.
The state chairman of the association, Comrade Haruna Shuaibu Tanko stated this in his remarks over the weekend in Minna , at the 9th send forth ceremony for 79 retired Nurses and Midwives out of which Five members died while still in active service.
He explained that though the association was aware of the move by the State government to employ 70 Nurses and Midwives including 40 Medical Doctors before the end of the year, there’s need to employ more as the number the government plans to engage would only be a temporary relief.
“This year, we are faced with the most alarming number of the retiring Nurses/ Midwives in Niger State. 74 retired this year and Five are dead, including the Director Nursing services, Health Management Board and the Head of Nursing services, General Hospital Mokwa and three other persons totalling 79.”
He also urged the State chapter of NANNM’ governing board to come up with modalities to regulate the activities of the Schools of Nursing/Midwifery in both Bida and Minna.
