The National Association of perioperative Nurses of Nigeria (NAPON) has called on the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to fight the issue of quackery in Nigeria. They made this position known in a communique issued at the end of its 15th National seminar/ scientific conference held at Sultan Maccido institute of Quaranic and General studies sokoto from 12th to 16th October 2015.

 

The communique noted with dismay the increase in the use of untrained and uncertificated nurses in most theatres across the country and called on the Nursing and Midwifery council of Nigeria to urgenlty look into this via its inspectorate unit.

 

NAPON considered the quality and relevance of papers presented at the conference on perioperative practice in Nigeria and reaffirmed the need for the consideration by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria to certify the certificate of participation awarded at the conference as suitable and acceptable by the council for the renewal of members practice license. 

 

The issue of the inadequate number of perioperative nursing training institutions in the northern parts of the country was ousted and a call for the managment of teaching hosptials to urgently consider the establishment of training schools. According to NAPON, This will provide the much needed operating room manpower to cope with the resolve to provide quality care to the teeming populace.

 

NAPON also emphasised the need to effectively control infection in the operating theatres especially in the Neuro/Spine theatres . The conference advised the instatllation of close circuit television in the theatres as this will reduce traffic in the operating theatre and reduce the risk of infection.

 

The association announced plans for the 16th edition of the National seminar/ scientific conference of National association of perioperative nurses of nigeria (NAPON) and called on hospital managment both public and private to ensure they sponsor and or release more of thier Nurses especially perioperative nurses for an increased participation by members in the light of the inherent benefit accruable from this conference to participants and by extension the facilities

 

NAPON appreciated the governemnt and the good people of sokoto state for the warm and cordial reception accorded her members. It also appreciated the moral and financial contributions made towards the success of this historic conference by the staff and managment of Uthman Danfodio Univrsity Teaching Hospital Sokoto.

 

The conference in session headed by the NAPON National chairman Comrade Abdulateef Adeyeni sincerely condoled with the governemnt and people of the federal republic of Nigeria on the disasters orchestrated by the stampede in saudi Arabia and the series of bomb blast across the country resulting to the loss of lives and properties and prayed that the souls of the departed rest in peace.

 

On the issue of insurgency and insecurity, it commended the efforts of the federal government via the military and para military agencies in brining this mind blowing precarious situation to a stop.

It thanked participants at the conference for their attendance especially the management that released and or sponsored their staff to the conference.
