National Hospital: Legal Practitioner Calls for Overhauling of Retainership Dept

Posted on: Fri 12-02-2016

A legal practitioner, Barr (Mrs) Adesina Salawu has called for a complete overhaul of the retainership department of the nation’s hospital, the National Hospital, over gross misconduct and unprofessional ethics been exhibited by the health record personnel of the department.

To checkmate such, Barr. Salawu said such has continued to occur due to lack of litigation from patients and urged that security cameras should be placed at strategic locations around the facility so that authorities can deal decisively with the ineptitude of the health record officers whom she referred to as not been sympathetic and do not show any form of empathy, and as such should have no business with the profession.

Salawu who made the call at a 2-day symposia on patient/ health records officers relationship and quality assurance in training school towards promoting efficient healthcare delivery system in Nigeria and which was organised by Health Records Officers Registration Board of Nigeria (HRORBN), recounted several ugly experiences with the health record personnel of the hospital whom several participants said were the thoughts of several Nigerians, advocated that sanctions such as outright sack, deduction of salaries and others within the confines of the law should be administered to inculcate change and discipline.

‎”It can take at least two hours for you to pay for your receipt and then before your file is even looked for.
The personnel are just wrong. They are just the wrong kind of people you can find working in a hospital. First of all, there is no sympathy and no empathy. I believe the jurisprudence of the healthcare provision is that anyone that is within that profession is expected to adhere to the level of ethical standard ‎with the people you are dealing with. You come to the hospital and you are being challenged about why you have to come at a certain time and they are not ready to help you do anything at all.”

“It needs to be completely overhauled. There needs to be a lot of sanctions. There needs to be a lot of people that have to be removed. The management itself needs to rise up to the occasion. Why not put security cameras around this hospital so that it will not look as if one is trying to malign some of the workers, so that it can be checked and played back to see some of the interactions that people have with the personnel of this department.”

‎”Some of them should be sent away. They should be sacked. You have to pick some of these people and make examples of them. When this is done and they realise there’s seriousness, they will sit up because at this point, people want service for their money. There are people out there that are more qualified than they are.”

“They can be queried, they can be removed, their salaries can be deducted and other things that will empower the authorities to do which is within the confines of the law‎.”

For what could be responsible for the attitude of the health records personnel, Salawu said “It is the wrong mentality and if one comes to work and is not there for the right reasons. If the reason for working is just to get paid, then one is in the wrong place. There should be some kind of satisfaction you get from what you are doing. They are round people in square pegs. These are people that should have nothing to do with the medical profession as well. It’s not just about general hospitals. The private hospitals are even worse.”
