The National Hospital, Abuja has performed six open heart surgeries on patients in the last one week, chief medical director of the hospital, Dr Jafaru Momoh has said.
Fielding questions from newsmen on Thursday in Abuja, Momoh said five of the patients who are all children have been successfully operated upon, and one was still being operated on at the theatre.
He said the operation for the batch of patients which commenced on Tuesday will end on Friday. The hospital had earlier on Tuesday did live update on social media the open heart surgery which was carried out in collaboration with a non-governmental organization, Hospitals for Humanity.
The chief medical director said the surgery arose out of the necessity to assist many Nigerians who cannot afford to travel abroad for medical treatment, and to also ensure that the hospital’s mandate of providing expert medical care to Nigerians was achieved.
Founder of Hospitals for Humanity who led the cardio-thoracic team from the United States, Dr. Segun Ajayi said the organization hopes to perform 200 open heart surgeries within the year, and will carry it out in partnership with the National Hospital, Garki Hospital and Jos University Teaching hospital.
