Health workers at National Hospital, Abuja, began a three-day warning strike on Monday to press the hospital management to implement an understanding that will allow workers skip a pay grade.
The strike came after workers, under the auspices of Joint Health Sector Unions, staged three days of work to rule last week in protest, prompting the NHA management to begin issuing letters to workers in attempts to avoid a strike.
Matthew Otonoko, chairman of National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives at the hospital, told Daily Trust unions would discuss NHA position but would “sustain the action until their skipping letters are released.”
The skipping of grade is a bureaucratic backing allowing workers on the CONHESS scale to move from 9 to 11, the equivalent of the other sectors’ skipping from GL 10 to 12.
National Hospital’s head of communications, Tayo Haastrup, confirmed to Daily Trust that letter distribution stopped on Friday but that unions and the management were dialoguing to stanch the strike by Monday evening.
A meeting convened by the health ministry is set to hold between NHA management and the unions on Tuesday, according to Tajudeen Rasaki, chairman of Medical and Health Workers Union at National Hospital, and could consider allowances in hopes of preventing the three-day strike from extending beyond Wednesday.
Workers union will consider the outcome of the meeting and review their position by Thursday.
