NAUTH Crisis: Group Urges Buhari to Intervene

Posted on: Tue 25-08-2015

THE crisis rocking the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi in Anambra State, over the appointment of a substantive chief medical director (CMD), has continued to fester, with a group, Concerned Progressive Professionals (CPP), urging President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene to resolve the protracted crisis and save the institution from chaos.

A statement jointly signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the group, Bonny Obinadike and Acada Okongwu respectively, and made available to Daily Sun, alleged that the current CMD, Prof. Anthony Igwegbe, had occupied the position on acting capacity since 2013; a situation, which they alleged ran contrary to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the country as amended.

The group stated that the 1999 Constitution as amended, provided for only three months acting capacity for the position, but the current CMD had been on the seat for over two years.

It further alleged that the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan, in compliance with all due processes, had appointed a substantive CMD but the then Minister of Health, bluntly refused to publish and gazette the appointment, thereby preventing the substantive CMD from assuming duties.
