Run for a Cure Africa (RFCA), a Non Governmental Organization that supports breast cancer treatment, has launched the first Patient Navigation Program for breast cancer patients at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, Lagos. This is coming after the NGO, in collaboration with LUTH management, launched the first Breast Clinic at the hospital in March.
Speaking to members of the Health Journalist Academy (HJA), recently at the clinic, RFCA Founder, Ebele Mbanugo, said the Patient Navigation Program would help provide practical advice to women as they navigate their treatment for breast cancer. “The Patient Navigator is there to help the patient understand diagnosis and survivorship plans, as well as give advice on access to services and funding.
“Additionally, the Patient Navigator is a knowledgeable resource working as a link to coordinate communication between the specialist Breast Care Team and the patient. The Patient Navigator is there to provide ongoing personal support to breast cancer patients and their families throughout their treatment and beyond” She said the experience of been diagnosed with breast cancer is often very scary so the program will help the patient navigate their way through the entire treatment time, and improve their chances of survival.
“RFCA research found that many women don’t complete breast cancer treatment for a multitude of complex psychological, economic & social reasons. Patient Navigation has been proven to help them combat these issues and complete treatment successfully, thus greatly improving survival rates”, she said.
