A Non-Governmental Organisation known as Free Healthcare Charitable organisation is set to establish a blood transfusion centre in Benue.
The National Co-coordinator of the group, Mr Abu Ali, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday.
He said that the initiative, which had been approved by the Federal Ministry of Health was in partnership with the Benue Government.
He added that “in view of this development, the Benue Governor,Dr Samuel Ortom is hosting a three-day health stakeholders forum on
the establishment of the centre.
“The group is, therefore, organising voluntary blood donation as part of the three-day package which will take place at Precious Conference Centre in Benue from Nov. 5 to Nov. 7. “Benue, which has a population of 3,780,398 and the 14th most populous state in Nigeria and a commercial nerve centre in the North Central Zone is long over-due for such a project.
“Considering its large population ,the state needs a standard blood transfusion centre for safe blood transfusions and also for donations in hospitals and other healthcare providing centres.’’
Ali said that this would guarantee efficient health services which would invariably reduce maternal and child mortality rates, as well as HIV transmission due to unsafe blood.
He added that voluntary blood transfusion would kick off immediately and individuals willing to donate blood would be thoroughly screened to ensure that the donor was fit.
The group’s coordinator said all equipment had been put in place to ensure adequate screening of voluntary blood donors, while sensitisation and awareness would be carried out across the state.
A medical doctor, Dr Udy Kalu, who was reacting to the development said it was a great initiative for the people of Benue, adding that
there was going to be a lot of chances to save lives in hospitals.
He said that “in situations where there is shortage of blood, especially in accident cases, expectant mothers in labour rooms, children in life compromising situations, the services of the centre will go a long way to assist. (NAN)
