Alhaji Idris Mohammed, General Manager, North-Central Zone A of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), says the scheme is not only for public servants.
Mohammed who spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Ilorin, said the scheme was also open to workers in the organised private sector.
The GM listed states in the zone as Kwara, Kogi and Niger, adding that there were various programmes for Nigerians to assess under the scheme.
He stated that any private sector that has up to 10 workers and above can enroll for the insurance coverage.
“We are working with Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA) as the umbrella body for all the organised private sectors, agencies and organisations to benefit like the public sector. “We started at the federal level, but we are now reaching out to the states and local governments to benefit from the programme,” he added.
According to him, there are other programmes designed to cover other segments, like the community-based social health insurance, designed to cover people in the rural areas.
Mohammed told NAN that NHIS was identifying those communities that want to key into the scheme, adding that NHIS was doing all it can to assist them.
“There is a new primary school health insurance programme which has been developed, and we are trying to encourage the various state governments to key into it.
“This one is a potential programme that can give us a milestone in terms of coverage in Nigeria.
“We equally have the vulnerable group programme, and one of them is Maternal and Childcare Programme which we have started implementing, using MDGs funding,” he said. (NAN)
