The South-West zone of the Nigerian Medical Association has berated the Osun State government for the non-payment of six-month salary arrears of the civil servants in the state, including doctors employed by the government.
The body, however, appealed to the governor, Rauf Aregbesola, to pay the outstanding salaries in order to reduce the hardship being suffered by workers.
This was contained in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Monday by the NMA, Ogun State branch. The statement was signed by Dr. Odewabi Adenike and Dr. Ayoola Zaheed, who are coordinating chairman and secretary, South-West NMA caucus respectively.
They had argued that despite having received monthly revenues from the federation account up till March 2015, the state government had refused to pay the workers.
The statement read in part, “The Osun State government has received monthly revenues from the federation account up till March 2015 – despite the general reduction in the monthly allocation to all states of the federation as a result of the dwindling fortunes of the national economy.
“But it has refused to pay the salaries of her civil servants since November 2014. Not even the aged pensioners were spared.”
The NMA said its members had continued to render selfless services to the people of the state despite the hardship being faced.
The NMA added, “We passionately plead with the executive governor of Osun to put a quick end to this hardship faced by our members by paying them their due wages.”
