An agreement between University of Abuja and National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development has come into effect to help both institutes collaborate on research in life sciences.
NIPRD at the weekend officially signed a memorandum with Uniabuja, becoming the next in an agreement to foster collaboration between industry and academia, after schools as Ahmadu Bello University and University of Maiduguri.
NIPRD director-general Karniyus Gamaniel said both institutes coming together “would put more meaning into their collaboration if they can demonstrate success” with the school.
“We want to create a programme of mutual interest to our mandate and pursue it together,” he added.
Under the agreement, NIPRD will hire best life-sciences graduates from Uniabuja, and its own workers can enroll for postgraduate studies at the university while doing their research work at NIPRD.
In turn, Uniabuja’s postgraduate students of life sciences and pharmaceutical studies can do their research at NIPRD, ensuring access to industry-grade equipment.
Both institutes will also exchange academic materials, develop joint research grant applications in life sciences and pharmaceuticals.
“If we pursue this more rigorously, a lot of things will come to the fore,” said Uniabuja vice chancellor Michael Adikwu, after signing the MOU on behalf of the school.
“We stand to gain a lot in terms of staff, equipment, research,” he added, noting the school would purse implementation to ensure the memorandum of understanding stays “active.”
