The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), has instituted a N20 million endowment fund to assist children and other relatives of its members who died along Abuja-Kaduna highway recently on their way to Sokoto state to attend its 56th Annual General Conference and Delegates Meeting.
A communiqué issue at the end of the conference said the association was deeply pained by the death, and had to abridge its activities at the conference in honour of the late delegates who were to represent Ekiti State at the event. Meanwhile, NMA has elected new National Officers Committee, NOC, to run its affairs for the next two year.
According to the communiqué, Prof. Mike Ogirima emerged president of the association, while Kingsley Enweremadu and Adamu Umar emerged1st and 2nd vice president respectively. Other officials include Yusuf Sununu, Secretary General; Ahmed Jacob, Deputy Secretary-General; and Dan Jumbo, National Treasurer. NMA said in spite of the tragedy, it was able to carry out free Medical Outreach Program to the people of Tangaza Local Government Area of Sokoto state where it said general and specialist medical services were offered to people in the local government.
A total of 754 patients were given attention, out of which 170 surgeries of different sub specialties were successfully carried out, the communiqué said. It informed that the association resolved that the former interim administrator of Federal Medical Centre Owo, Dr Adediran Kolajo, be suspended indefinitely and referred to the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria for further disciplinary action.
