Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, yesterday expressed hope that the Federal Government will fulfil its promise to end medical tourism in the country. NMA President, Professor Mike Ogirima, who spoke on the backdrop of President Muhammadu Buhari’s latest trip to the United Kingdom to treat an ear infection, after his administration had banned medical travels for public office holders except in cases that cannot be handled in Nigeria, maintained that the implementation of such policy was long overdue.
Ogirima said the association will come up with an official position on the matter once they are able to get official reasons regarding Mr President’s health situation which prompted his travel abroad. The NMA President was in Bauchi to witness the ruling in a case instituted by members of his association against the University of Jos and its Governing Council challenging the exclusion of NMA members in the selection process of the institution’s Vice Chancellor.
However, the Federal High court, Bauchi failed to deliver judgment on the matter as the court could not sit. It was learnt that the court was closed yesterday in honour of one the judges who was said to have passed on.
NMA President, who expressed disappointment over the development, however, expressed the hope that his members will get justice whenever the court fixes the date for judgement.
