The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has warned doctors against indiscipline negligence adn unethical behaviour which could dent the profession's image.
NMA President Dr. Kayode Obembe handed down the warning yesterday in Ado-Ekiti While addressing a news conference to mark the end of the body's weeklong National Executive Council(NEC) meeting.
He said the Medical Dental Council of Nigeria(MDCN) has been empowered to punish erring doctors found guilty of breacching the Hippocratic Oath they had sworn to and to protect the integrity of the Profession.
The NMA Chief explained that any doctor found to have violated the oath would face a medical tribunal, which, he said has the status of a high court to look into complaints against him or her to reduce unethical practices to the barest minimum. Obembe stressed that negligence was culpable in law and advised those having complaints to channel same to appropriate quarters, adding that doctors found guilty have had their medical licences withdrawn, among other sanctions.
He added that medical practitioners could treat emergencies without Polices report saying they were under obligation to save life first and report the Police later as provided for under the National Health Act passed into Law by the National Assembly.
Responding to questions on why privileged citizen still travel abroad for treatment of ailments and diseases that were treatable in Nigeriam Obembe attributed such trips to ignoranceand perception that medical tourism was a symbol.
