Ebonyi state government, on Thursday, said that it has not recorded any confirmed case of Lassa fever in since 2015.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Daniel Umezurike, who disclosed this to newsmen in office during a press briefing, said what the state currently recorded is suspected cases of the disease which has not been confirmed.
He noted that the only Lassa fever cases were recorded in 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2014, adding that about 10 died of the virus with health workers, doctors and consultants. He said the cases can only be regarded as Lassa fever after laboratory test, adding that sample of the cases have been taken Lassa Fever Research Hospital, Irua, Edo state.
He explained that on 26th December, a 29- year- old lady was suspected to have contracted the virus and was taken to the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, for medical attention but she refused to be admitted and then died the following day.
He said samples of the symptoms shown by the deceased has been collected and taken to Lassa fever research and control centre in Irua, Edo State and that the result is being awaited to prove whether she died of the virus or not.
Umezuruike added that on 13th January this year, a 30 -year-old man who showed symptoms of the disease was taken to hospital for treatment and he died on 17th, but noted that when tested the result was negative.
The Commissioner said the state government has scaled up surveillance on the virus and has instructed health workers to pick suspected cases for early detection and treatment.
