The Chief Medical Officer of Karu General Hospital, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr Oladele Fagbohun, says noise can endanger people’s health.

Fagbohun told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja yesterday that noise did not have to be too loud to be injurious to health.

According to him, noise can be unhealthy once it does not allow people to rest properly.

“There are two ways you can look at noise; one as in form of pollution. Two, depending on the level of the loudness.

“As pollution, it does not have to be too loud for it to constitute pollution; but whether in the form of pollution or not a level of loudness can endanger the health of an individual.

“In an environment where there should be no noise, where somebody is either busy working, or wants to work quietly or resting. Or where he is in fact asleep, any form of noise that is disturbing at that time, constitutes pollution to that person.

“That’s why if such disturbance continues for a long time it may be hazardous to his health and that is mainly preventing him from rest properly.

“And he wakes up not well-rested that may affect both his mental and physical performance the following day.”
The chief medical director attributed many cases of hypertension and peptic ulcer to noise pollution.
