The Kwara State Chairman, Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria, Dr. Adekunle Salaudeen, on Thursday, said that non-communicable diseases were on the rise in rural communities in the country.
Identifying some of the diseases as hypertension, diabetes and chronic kidney problems, Salaudeen called for greater investment in community health to address the challenges facing the sector.
Salaudeen, who was represented by the Senior Registrar, Epidemiology and Community Health Department of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Dr. Ahmad Abdullahi, spoke during APHPN community health outreach programme at Ilala in Irepodun Local Government Area of the state.
He noted that community health would help to make medical care accessible to more people. Salaudeen said, “Experiences from our community health services show that there are many communicable and non-communicable diseases that affect the rural populace and non-communicable diseases are on the rise.
“Our doors are open to those who want to assist to render help in community health services. Our outreach is just a signal to those who will come to the aid of community such as philanthropists, donor agencies and the government.
“Definitely, we cannot cope with the demand. The government at all levels, philanthropists and other stakeholders should invest more in community health.”
The Oba of Ilala Kingdom, Abdulwahab Adeyemi, said there was the need to invest more in community health.
He called for greater collaboration among stakeholders to improve on health care delivery in the country
