Oyo State team Leader of the Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI), Mrs Stella Akinso, has revealed that three more local government areas in the state capital have been scheduled to benefit from the second phase of the organisation’s family planning activities.
Mrs Akinso stated this in her remarks at an event organised to highlight how NURHI fared in the first phase of the project, last week in Ibadan.
Speaking on the newly incorporated local government areas, Mrs Akinso said, “Akinyele, Oluyole and Egbeda Local Government areas would now be included in the new phase so that more grassroots people can benefit from the family planning message.
“We are happy with our previous successes, and we know that taking the message to these three local government areas would continue to help in the reduction of maternal and child mortality in the state,” Mrs Akinso said.
Also speaking, a Director in the Ministry of Women Affairs, Mrs Christy Popoola, commended NURHI for its efforts, saying “your activities have gone a long way to improve the health and socio-economic status of women in the state.
“Since family planning has a lot to do with women, we want you to continue to carry the Ministry of Women Affairs along so that more women can benefit from your programmes.”
Saying that the extension of the family planning services to three more local government areas is good news, the Chairman of the Advocacy Core Group, Sheikh
Salaudeen Buseeri, said his organisation would also continue to work hand-in-hand with NURHI to ensure that deaths during child birth are brought to zero level in the state.
“Apart from the dissemination of the family planning message, we have also been able to gain the support of Muslim and Christian leaders in the state, who have promised that they would continue to share the message in their various places of worship,” Sheikh Buseeri said.
