Chief Medical Director of Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile Ife, Prof. Victor Adetiloye, on Wednesday urged Nigerians to show more trust in medical services offered by various tertiary health care providers in the country.

Speaking with newsmen in his office, Adetiloye said the Federal Government had invested a lot in training of medical personnel, stressing that the skills aquired by them had not been fully utilised by Nigerians seeking medicare.

He said funds going into other countries where Nigerians sought medical attention would help improve the country’s health system when people patronised local health facilities.

He said experts from OAUTHC that had been exposed to best medical trainings abroad, had successfully carried out over 70 open heart surgeries in the last two years at the cost lower than what any hospital abroad would charge for such procedure.

Also, as part of achievements of the hospital, Adetiloye said OAUTHC was the first hospital to successfully carry out pin hole surgery on patients, adding that over 600 procedures of such had been performed.

He said, “Over 70 cases of open heart surgeries have been performed in the last two years. We also carried out the first double switch procedure in West Africa.

“In the last one year of acquiring modern Endoscopy suite, over one thousand procedures have been carried out.

“We are the only hospital in West Africa to have performed Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-pancreatography procedure. Seventy five procedures of this kind had been performed in the last one year. We also did about 100 of total knee and hip replacement in the last four years.”

He commended Federal Government for the support for the hospital, saying all the achievements he recorded as CMD were made possible owing to funding received from government.
