The Association of Resident Doctors at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, has vowed to proceed on an indefinite strike if the management of the hospital fails to pay the doctors’ salaries within the next two days.
In a statement on Tuesday, the President of the ARD of the hospital, Dr. Nurudeen Akindele, alleged that a cabal in the hospital management had been sabotaging the payment of salaries from January till date without any cogent reason.
“We are still working and we will continue to work but if by 4pm on Thursday, our demands are not met, we won’t have any other choice but to embark on an indefinite strike,” Akindele said.
The ARD President said some persons in the management were making the working environment hostile, thereby frustrating their jobs. He added that a series of consultations had been held to forestall any industrial action, saying the meetings had not yielded any result.
The statement read, “As of March 22, our members have yet to be paid two months’ salaries despite the fact that we have been working. That shows the level of understanding, perseverance and maturity we have actually displayed.
“Unfortunately, the salary warrant that came on February 9 had a shortfall in it, which also indicated that our members were going to be paid less than 40 per cent of what they were supposed to earn. Beyond that, getting the salary paid to our members became a problem.
“Before we could lay our hands on any percentage of that money, for whatever reason, it took about close to the end of February or thereabout.
“We actually got about 87.5 per cent of the basic salary, without allowances for January, which translates to 38 per cent of the full emoluments for our members.”
Akindele noted that when the health workers went on strike, the doctors made it a point of duty to continue working but had not been paid.
“It’s so painful that despite the fact that we worked, and still working, they (healthworkers) have been paid but not us,” he said.
