The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has called on the federal government to ensure that the one per cent tax on breweries, tobacco and telecommunication companies operating in the country, is collected.
The group also decried shortage of medical doctors in the country, which it said presently stands at one doctor to 6,000 patients instead of one to 600 as recommended by the World Health Organisation. It called on the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to accredit more public health facilities for the training of interns.
While commending President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing what they called core professionals to head the Ministry of Health, the NMA called for immediate payment of ten months arrears of relativity, while implementation of skipping allowance for doctors should commence by January, 2016.
Addressing a press conference after its National Executive Council meeting in Ado Ekiti yesterday, the NMA president, Dr Kayode Obembe, said tobacco companies must pay more taxes to ensure provision of facilities in public health institutions.
