The National Optometric Association (NOA) has urged Nigerians to go for eye test, at least, once a year to avoid preventable blindness.
It also warned against exploitation by quacks, while counseling Nigerians to visit registered optometrists and registered clinics to ensure quality services and products.
The president of the National Optometric Association (NOA), Dr Damian Echendu, gave the advice yesterday in Abuja, when he led his management team on a courtesy visit to the Director, Quality Assurance and Development, Consumer Protection Council (CPC), Mr Emmanuel Amlai.
Echendu said the association’s priority objective is to put in place, the necessary standards that will continue to provide quality eye care services to the Nigerian populace as well as boost optometry industry and profession in Nigeria. Expressing the association’s interest in forming a cooperative partnership with CPC, he said, “CPC is well known for issuing and implementing guidelines under its enabling laws to sellers of good and consumers. We believe that such services can be harnessed in safeguarding the quality of optometry care in Nigeria.”
According to him, the World Health Organisation (WHO) Strategic Objective 11 empasises the need to ensure improved access to quality products and services, adding that Nigeria needs to be at the forefront of this effort, particularly, in the regulation of optometric products and services offered to the public.
He complained that currently, there is limited information on consumer rights with respect to eye care, guidance on complaints handling processes and lack of optical consumer complaints service.
