Nasarawa State governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, on Thursday, lamented that over 70 per cent of the workers in about 700 health centres in the state were unskilled.
He stated this in Lafia, the state capital, while receiving the Chief Field Officer of UNICEF, Kaduna office, Mr Utpal Moitra, who paid him courtesy visit.
The governor said the state government was working out modalities with the nursing council to increase admission into the state School of Nursing currently undergoing expansion to meet up the required workforce in the state health sector.
Al-Makura added that government would also work out modalities of employing the students before graduation to motivate them and to balance up the much needed nursing workforce in the state.
According to him: “We have about 700 primary health care centres, but lack of trained capacity workforce has been one of our major challenges because it looks like nursing and midwifery is no longer attractive for our people”.
He said that he had mandated the state planning commission to collate statistical data for developing strategic masterplan that would be used in health development initiative.
Earlier in his speech, Mr. Moitra, told the governor that UNICEF was ready to provide technical assistance to the state government, especially in the area of free health care services.
He assured that the agency would collaborate with the state government in its bid to develop manpower capacity to offer competitive healthcare delivery services to the populace, especially in rural areas.
