The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Oyo State branch, has called on the Federal Government and other stakeholders to intervene in the ongoing strike action embarked upon by their colleagues in Osun State for non-payment of their salaries and arrears by the state government.
The NMA Chairman, in Oyo State, Dr. Muideen Olatunji, while addressing a press conference titled: “Halt This Genocide”, on Thursday, in Ibadan, stated that the strike had made hospitals around the state non-functional with patients resorting to private hospitals. Olatunji said that the effects of the strike had led to an increase in quackery across the state, increased maternal mortality and other forms of mortality, and that all peaceful efforts of their colleagues to prevail on the government to pay their entitlements had been meeting brick walls.
He said that it was also worrisome that the government that got the support of the people during the elections had advertised for new doctors in a bid to replace the striking doctors who were demanding their rights.
