Oyo: WHO, Others Move to Curtail Measles Outbreak

Posted on: Tue 26-01-2016

Health officials from the Oyo State Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization, University College Hospital and other development partners have commenced intervention in the measles outbreak recorded at Sabo, Ibadan, which has so far claimed one life.

Acting Director of Public Health, Dr. Taiwo Ladipo, in a statement blamed the only confirmed death on the failure of the parents to seek medical attention when they noticed the child’s condition.

He said that the ministry was first notified of the outbreak on January 11, which prompted the development partners, including the Nigeria Field Epidemiology and Laboratory Training Programme, to move into the area the following day for proper investigation and intervention.

Within a week of stepping into the matter, he said that 32 suspected cases of measles were identified in Sabo. He advised residents to reduce overcrowding and improve ventilation in their homes, as well as to seek prompt medical attention once symptoms are noticed.
