The Nigeria Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers (NAPPMED) has decried what it described as the exploitative attitude and victimisation of its members by the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria (PCN).
NEPPMED also accused PCN of peddling falsehood that its members had established pharmaceutical stores in every part of the country.
The outgoing national president of NAPPMED Mr. Vincent Mammah, made this known yesterday in Abuja during the inauguration of the national executive council.
“They are trying to phase patent medicine vendors out, they are out to frustrate us out of business, under the guise that pharmacists have enough hands to cover the whole country.
He also stated several international organisations with focus on health care delivery to the grassroots had at all times identified efforts of patent medicine vendors, noting that the pharmacists are elitist in their operation, thereby could not effectively relate with the people in local communities.
“They are too elitist, and we relate more to the people in rural communities, I believe they should involve themselves more in the manufacturing and importation of pharmaceutical products, but those due to lack of opportunities, they are asking patent medicine vendors to leave the business.”
Meanwhile, the current national president, Joel Odo in his inaugural speech vowed to resist exploitation from PCN.
He also said the association would create a database of its members so as to identify and protect all members from the aggression of PCN.
He however enjoined patent medicine dealers across the country to identify with the association in tackling their challenges.
“I am not in doubt that PCN is seeking the extinction NAPPMED. We shall develop our national database, the world now is a global village,” he stated.
