The stakeholders meeting on United Nations Commission on Ufe Saving Commodities for Women and Children (UNColSC) was held at the Bolton White Hotels Area 11 Abuja on the 2200 of June 2016. A total of 60 representatives from different organizations participated in this meeting. The organizations represented include; Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), National Population Commission(NPopC), State Ministries of Health of Ebonyi and Kaduna State. Others in attendance were Development Partners and Civil Society Organizations drawn from WHO, UNFPA, PATHS2, SFH, Also in attendance were, Pathfinder International, SMLAS, ClSFP, UNFPA, OKT International, MSION (Marie Stopes International Organization Nigeria), M&E Institute, SWOGE, MEARF, Earth spring International" NPHCDA, Population Council, C4C,ARFH, MARF,MEI,SWOGE, SLNI, MAOF, CHEDHEN, FOMWAN, EVA ETIHEALTH, Richben and HEmry Consulting, Garga Media,. media representatives from ITV, Daily Trust, leadership, Peoples Daily and Thisday Newspapers.
2. The meeting looked into the country implementation plan of United Nations Commission on Life Saving Commodities for Women and Children and assessed the level of implementation by the government. The meeting also discussed the revised Nigeria Essential Medicine List (EMl) to know whether Emergency Contraceptives and the other 2 reproductive health commodities of UNColSC (Female Condom and Implant) were placed 01') the revised EMl.The meeting also looked at the various interventions from partners in promoting the 3 commodities : Female Condom, Emergency Contraceptives and Implants. Preliminary findings of a pilot intervention study titled examining and strengthening the roles of patent medicine vendors in the provision injectable contraceptives was also discussed during the meeting.
Goodwill messages were given by FMOH, Population Council, National Population Commission, Pathfinder, State Ministries of Health of Ebonyi and Kaduna.
3. Following extensive deliberation of the progress on the country implementation plan and the -gains recorded by the partners working on the commodities. The meeting recognized the exceptional role played by the government and the following are the specific resolutions agreed upon as the next steps to ensure availability and use of the 3 commo~ities in Nigeria. • The meeting reaffirmed that Reproductive Health and Family Planning services and commodities must be available and accessible to adolescents, youths and women of reproductive age. Government must implement the policy of free family planning services with availability of consumables.
• The meeting recognized the importance of the private sectors in financing reproductive health and family planning hence government at all levels are encouraged to partner with the private sector in promoting, strengthening and expanding access and choice of quality Reproductive Health and Family Planning services and commodities. This will contribute towards achieving the National strategic development goals of increased Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (CPR) and reducing the unacceptable Unmet Needs and Maternal Deaths in Nigeria
• The meeting reinforced the importance of budget line for Family Planning. States and local Governments that are yet to create budget lines for family plannmg are encourage to do so speedily to ensure family planning commodities and services are readily available.
• The meeting appreciated the efforts of FMOH on enlistment of emergency contraceptives on Nigeria Essential Medicine List and further encouraged the Reproductive Health Unit of the FMOH to include EC on procurement list for 2016.
• Recognizing the spread and reach of mobile technology, the meeting emphasized the need to use mobile platform for dissemination of family planning messages for a wider reach
• The meeting also expressed support for continuous training of service providers and procurement of required job aids such as models and FP counseling tools to close the knowledge gap and increase awareness on Family Planning
• State and Local Government should commit to strengthening and ensure the last mile distribution offamily planning commodities.
• In order to 'provide a full range of services, increase awareness and demand creation, the meeting supports the integration of Female Condoms in all Family Planning programs.
• The meeting emphasized the need for an urgent establishment of a State level Family Planning Advocacy Task team to be Chaired by the Hon. Commissioner for Health.
The meeting Communique was adopted by all participants present.
