Following the visit of monitoring team to most parts of Niger State, the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria PCN has sealed 17 pharmacies and 309 patent medicine stores in Niger State for contravening guidelines for operation.
The director, Inspection and Monitoring Unit of the council, Anthonia Aruya, who brief journalists yesterday after the monitoring in the state said that 19 compliance directives were also issued comprising of nine pharmacies and 10 patent medicine stores.

According to her, “Some observations from the field in Niger State revealed that stakeholders engage in sale of medicines with disregard for laid down guidelines put in place for setting up such facilities. Adherence to approved scope of practice in terms of training and approval was largely non existence as people without requisite knowledge or skills to handle medicines in their facilities abound.” The head of the team said that few people were found not to be able to communicate in English, which could result in plethora of treatment misadventure with grave public health implication.
Similarly, Aruya disclosed that her team got hint of the presence of banned codeine and tramadol substances in the state and was trailing the dealers.
While advising the public to source drugs from registered and currently licensed pharmacies and over the counter medicine stores, he stated that both the pharmacies and patent dealers should know their limitations.
