As part of efforts to revamp the nation's ailing healthcare delivery system through a patient-oriented- approach, the new and 20th President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria ( PSN), Mf. Ahmed Yakasai , has rolled out plans to strengthen the nation' health sector by enhancing the role and performance of the society.
The society which was founded in 1927 is an umbrella body of all the licensed and registered pharmacists in Nigeria.
Appraising the nation's health sector at a press briefing in Lagos, Yakasai , who unveiled his vision for PSN to newsmen, said he plans to strengthen the society through collaborative, participatory, responsive and transparentleadership with the overall aim of moving the health sector forward.
Assuring that his leadership will among other things, ensure the existence. of robust and functional Primary Healthcare system in the country through the implementation of the National Health Act.

The PSN President expressed displeasure over the delay in the Implementation of the Act, pointing out that since the Nigeria's first National Act was passed into law in 20 I 4,nothing serious has happened in terms of operating the basic tenets of the enabling Act. This Act, he said, if implemented will be funded from one percent of Nigeria's consolidated revenue and grants by International donor partners through the National Health Care Development Agency which will manage 45 percent of the fund as follows: essential drugs and vaccines 20 per cent; laboratory equipment and transport 15 per cent; and human resources 10 per cent.
Adding that while the National Health Insurance Scheme which will manage 50 percent of the fund which will cover pregnant women, children who are less than five years, the elderly from 65 years and physically" challenged persons. The Federal Ministry of Health will manage five per cent of the fund for the provision of basic minimum package of health facilities (emergencies).
To effectively achieve his vision for the society which is now 88 years old, Yakasai promised to enhance the role ofPSN by means of wider advocacy at various national and international fora.
And also stimulate public awareness and knowledge on various health, hygiene, sanitation issues and diseases with specific emphasis on drugs.
The PSN boss stressed that he will vigorously pursue and promote rational use of drugs among Nigerians especially at the grass root levels with cooperation from medical fraternity as well as the implementation of the National Drug Distribution Guidelines(NDDG).
Yakasai who was Former Commissioner of Commerce, Industry, Cooperatives and Tourism in Kano Stat . between 2005 and 2010, also promised to foster better communications with Federal and state ministries, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and 'Control (NAFDAC), National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Pharmacists Council ofNigeria(PCN), National Health Insurance Scheme(NHIS),schools of pharmacy among others.
He further promised to actualize the following for the society during his tenure as the president: strengthening ties and relationship with other professionalorganizations and agencies; establish a mechanism for recognizing and endorsing valuable contributions of members (past, present and future );encourage and give more opportunities and build more capacities of young pharmacists and students of pharmacy; strengthening institutional framework(structure, system and processes) of PSN.
