Posted on: Fri 26-09-2014

The Pharmacists council of nigeria is the parastatal of the federal government established by Act Cap P17, LFN, 2004 and charged with the responsibility among others, of regulating and controlling of pharmacy education, training and practice in all aspects and ramifications. www.medicalworldnigeria.com

The regulation of all premises where pharmaceutical activities are carried out is undertaken through the processess of inspection, approval, registration and annual licensure of the premises. These premises include manufacturing, importation, distribution and wholesale outfits as well as community and hospital pharmacies, and patent and proprietary medicines vendors shops.

The general public is called upon to note that privatizationo f hospital pharmacy in the public health sector at any level is a process that may negate the cardinal function of government to provide affordable and accessible pharmaceutical services to the generality of nigerians particularly to the less priviledged, as entrenched in the national strategic health development plan (NSHDP) endorsed by the fedral and 36 state governments and the federal capital territory, the national drug policy and Mr. Presidents transformation agenda.

Privization of public owned hospital pharmacies clearly reveals the moral ineptitude of a few individuals who are seeking to divert a guaranteed public service to few private individuals to the detriment of the majority.

In line with the federal government policy on public private partnership, the guidelines for the implementation of the public private partnership in the public owned hospital pharmacy in NIgeria can be accessed from the pharmacists council of Nigeria. For avoidance of doubt, only full time employees of government must superintend, oversee and run the public owned hospital pharmacy under any PPP arrangement. This is purely in consideration of the public health implication.medicalworldnigeria.com
