Six states are set to benefit 954 Primary Healthcare Centres from the Department of International Development (DFID), an aid response team with United Kingdom serving as parent.
Also, 110 PHCs which will serve as rapid-result initiative will be provided in the first year of the journey of 10,000 PHCs which has commenced from the June 1. It’s is expected that at the end of the exercise, every political ward will have one centre.
This was revealed on Monday by the Executive Director of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr Ado Muhammad at the harmonisation of efforts for achievement of Universal Health Coverage held in Abuja.
While stating that the responsibility of PHCs is that of local government with support from state government, Dr. Ado said DFID is partnering with the Agency so that 10,000 PHCs of the federal government programme in the health sector will come to fruition while disclosing the benefitting states as Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe and Kaduna. “For this year 2016, we want to take on 5,000 PHCs and make the functional so that they can be able to provide quality care for those centres. We will be taking on 5,000 political wards. As part of entry point, that will be what we will be taking in the next one year, as a proof of concept, we are taking on 110 PHCs as rapid result initiative, starting from June 1.”
“Responsibility of PHCs is that of local government. With support from state government, so what the federal government is doing is to provide leadership and stewardship. For this particular agenda, we expect the states to continue to discharge their own obligation while we support them with drugs and human resources.”
“Is a national programme and not a federal government programme and so we are working with states towards ensuring it’s success while leveraging on donors such as DFID which is supporting with the functionality of the PHCs.”
