Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, yesterday said the removal of Nigeria from the list of polio endemic countries had vindicated traditional rulers as lovers of their people.

Speaking at a meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers Committee on Primary Healthcare held at his palace, Sultan Sa’ad said their intervention was not for any personal gain but to ensure their people were healthier and productive.

He reiterated that the fight was not over until polio is eliminated.

The monarch also said traditional rulers would not ignore the state of public hospitals, urging members of the committee to make sure medical facilities were made available to the people.

He added that the meeting should have taken place long before now because the real fight started from the time the country was delisted.

“It is important to know that the real fight is now. We must redouble our effort so that our partnership with governments and the supporting international agencies do not go down the rail,” he said.
Earlier, the Executive Director, National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Ado Muhammad, attributed the success recorded in the fight against polio to the sustained contributions of the traditional institution.

According to him, there were about 800 cases of polio before their intervention in 2009 which kept reducing consistently until this year when the country was removed from the list of endemic countries.

In his remarks, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal who was represented by the Commissioner of Health, Dr. Shehu Kakale, said names of the traditional rulers would be written in gold for their sustained efforts towards the fight against killer diseases.
