A pharmaceutical giant, Merck Pharmaceuticals has said that public and private partnerships are critical to translate political declarations and financial commitments on universal health coverage (UHC)into concrete results for patients and citizens.
The vice chairman and deputy chief executive officer, Merck and president, International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations, Dr Stefan Oscchman, disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja at a high-level private sector roundtable which had as its theme, “the critical role of the private sector in achieving universal health coverage (UHC) in Nigeria.
He noted that the private sector has multiple skills that can be leveraged by both the global community and governments, saying, “for example, the private sector can bring market discipline, innovation and additional resources to the table. We have skills in supply chain management, education and training, research and development and project management.
According to Osochman, by participating in multi-sectoral partnerships, the private sector can support Nigeria to strengthen its health systems, create innovative financing models and build the evidence that will be crucial to implementing UHC. He also tasked the government to focus attention on the growing burden of chronic diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and respiratory conditions collectively as they comprise a significant proportion of the global disease burden.
“In Nigeria alone, these four diseases make up 24 per cent of all deaths reported in the country and this figure is expected to increase in the coming years. Therefore ramping up our work on non communicable diseases is critical to achieving UHC in Nigeria”
The vice chairman and deputy chief executive officer, Merck said that reducing risk factors for disease is an effective means of prevention and its also less expensive to prevent than treat disease.
