President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) Pharm. Ahmed Yakasai has called for increased funding for Amoxicillin dispersible tablets for pneumonia in children, and low Osmolarity ORS solution / Zinc sulphate for diarrhoea as approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF).
Yakasai spoke in Lagos when he led a team of pharmacists on a visit to the Commissioner for Health, Lagos State, Dr. Jide Idris. According to a UNICEF report, pneumonia is the leading cause of under-five child mortality globally, with an estimated 1.2 million deaths annually with 60% occurring in just 10 countries including Nigeria, Bangladesh, D.R. Congo, Ethiopia, India, Kenya, among others.
