In the wake of the impending outbreak of meningitis epidemic in the country, the Joint Health Sector Union and Assembly of Healthcare Professionals, APHA, have called on President Mohammadu Buhari to urgently reactivate the defunct Vaccine Production Laboratories in Yaba, Lagos.
Making the call in Lagos, in a joint statement, the JOHESU/APHA coalition said the inability of the country to produce meningitis and other human vaccines betrays the lack of focus in the nation’s health sector.
“We call on Mr. President Buhari to support our members to reactivate the Vaccine Production Laboratories, Yaba, for production of vaccines within the country,” Heads of the 12 member organisations of the coalition stated in a statement.

They said it is lamentable that Nigeria prefers to import all the essential vaccines required for routine immunisation, at a time when global emphasis is on promotion of preventive healthcare through immunisation and control of vaccine preventable diseases.
“It is on record that Nigerian medical laboratory scientists produced millions of doses of smallpox vaccine in Yaba in the 1960s and 1970s which were exported to the West African sub-region for the eradication of Smallpox.
“Yellow Fever and Rabies vaccines were similarly produced in the country. Nigeria is spending millions of dollars importing Yellow Fever and Rabies vaccines as we speak.”
