A surgeon with the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Dr. Lucky Onotai, has appealed to the abductors of his wife and physiotherapist, Mrs. Uju Onotai, to release her.
Mrs. Onotai, a nursing mother of two, was reportedly abducted by four gunmen at about 7.30 am on Monday as she was about to enter the East-West Road from Alakahia village. She was going to drop her four-year-old son in school when the gunmen struck.
It was gathered that the victim was forcefully dragged out of her car and transferred to another vehicle while they left her son inside her car.
A statement made available to our correspondent on Saturday indicated that the husband of the kidnapped woman and other members of her family had been worried over her safety, especially as she was still breastfeeding her newborn baby.
“Mrs. Uju Jane Onotai, a physiotherapist and a mother of two, was kidnapped by gunmen on April 27, 2015 by 7.30 am on her way to drop off her four-year-old son in his school before leaving for her office in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.
“She was attacked by four armed men carrying machine guns as she was about approaching the East-West Road from Alakahia Village. She was forcefully brought out of her car and was transferred into theirs leaving behind the son in her car.
“The family of Onotai is appealing to the abductors to return Mrs. Uju Jane Onotai unharmed to them.
“Imagine the ordeal the baby, who is still being weaned, is passing through right now, and the trauma, both physically and mentally, she and members of her family are passing through.
“We are praying for God’s intervention and looking forward to her safe release,” the statement read.
Earlier, the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapists in Nigeria had called on the police and other security agencies to intensify efforts in rescuing its kidnapped member.
Chairman of the Rivers State Chapter of the group, Dr. Apollos Akomaku, explained that Onotai was kidnapped on her way to work on Monday at the UPTH.
Akomaku expressed regret that doctors were being targeted for kidnap despite the selfless services they render to members of the public.
He appealed to the abductors to release the kidnapped physiotherapist without conditions.
