The House of Representatives yesterday urged the resident doctors of the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano to suspend their strike and dialogue with the federal government on the matter. The House also urged the federal government to “without further delay adhere to the terms of the agreement withthe resident doctors.”
Adopting a motion by Rep Abubakar Nuhu Danburam (APC, Kano), the House said there was need for both parties to reach an amicable settlement on the strike so that the patients that have been at the receiving end would be attended to.
Danburam in his motion said the strike embarked upon by the resident doctors since June “has paralyzed activities at the hospital, and presently over 1,200 patients are not being attended to, including emergency cases.”
He said the strike was as a result of the non-implementation of the agreement between management of the hospital and the federal ministries of health and labour and productivity after previous labour dispute necessitated by non-inclusion of additional funds in their budget.
He said the additional amount agreed upon was N31.6 million monthly as compensation to doctors for skipping a grade level as a matter of the hospital policy.
The motion was unanimously adopted by the lawmakers.
