Members of the House of Representatives yesterday launched investigation into the administration of contributors’ funds by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) since its inception.
The committee on healthcare services, mandated to carry out the probe is to ascertain the activities of the health management organisations and their level of compliance with guidelines issued by the NHIS.
This followed a motion by Rep Onwubuariri Kingsley and two others members, who said the scheme has ready- made pool of funds to realise the aims and objectives of its establishment. Rep Kingsley added that the estimated projection for 2015 by the scheme stands at 30 percent coverage but presently only 2.9 percent which amounts to about five million people out of a population of more than 165 million that have access to the scheme.
He said that the generality of the populace have not been benefiting from the statutory contributions of government even as many companies and individuals have pulled out of the scheme because of poor services from hospitals.
