The House of Representatives has resolved to start the process of restructuring the National Hospital, Abuja to make it more efficient.
The House therefore mandated its joint committees on health institutions, health services and governmental affairs to conduct a public hearing with a view to proffering lasting solutions to the state of the hospital in terms of restructuring, reorganizing, refinancing and repositioning.
This followed the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance by Rep Muhammad Sani Abdu (APC, Bauchi).
Leading the debate on the motion, Rep Abdu said since the upgrade of the National Hospital to a tertiary referral hospital and centre of excellence in 1999, service delivery began well but deteriorated thereafter.
He said the level of decay in both physical structure and service delivery indices had become intolerable, adding, that “the high level of callousness, maladministration and loss of medical and work ethics in the hospital” was disturbing. This situation, he said, had led to untold pains among patients and their relations while seeking medical care at the hospital, noting that the incessant industrial actions in the hospital had worsened the situation.
Meanwhile, a Wuse Zone 6 Chief Magistrates’ Court in Abuja yesterday vacated the order which sealed the hospital on Tuesday.
It was sealed for alleged unpaid debt of N7.8m to the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB).
The Magistrate, Mrs Chinyere Nwacheonwu, adjourned the case till July 18 for report of settlement. The defence counsel, Chris Mamman, had made an oral application for settlement and vacation of the order.
Earlier, the prosecuting counsel, Nnamdi Ugochukwu, had told the court that a summon was issued to the defendant on May 17.
He told the court that the defendant received the summon on May 26, but failed to appear in court on June 8.
