The Senior Staff Association of Universities, Teaching Hospitals, Research Institutes and Associated Institutions (SSAUTHRIAI) at the weekend said appointing “outsiders” as Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of institutes is hindering their progress.
In a statement after SSAUTHRIAI’s Sectoral Council Meeting, the chairman, Barrister Felix Uwadiae, said the federal government was supposed to appoint employees of the institutes as their CEOs for continuity and development.
“We frown at the practice of appointing Chief Executive Officers from outside the research institutes. This is believed to be the bedrock of the many problematic issues plaguing research institutes, because these CEOs do not have a stake in the development and progress of the institutes. We call on the federal government to henceforth appoint CEOs from among direct employees of the institutes’’, the union said. It added: “A clear example is the industrial crisis in the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria, Ibadan, resulting in the ‘matchetting’ of many workers; and letters written to the Presidency have not been acknowledged. Therefore, we call on President Buhari to make known actions that have been taken so far”.
On staff welfare, the union thanked the president for the steps taken in settling all outstanding benefits of federal workers, urging him to effect the payment soon while he continues to combat corruption.
