The inaugural edition of the FCT chapter of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD-FCT) Sports Festival commenced today at the Area 10 Old Parade Ground Sports Complex, Abuja. The two-week long event will see Abuja-based doctors of Nigerian descent compete for honours in five sporting events among themselves in different games like; scrabble, table tennis, chess and draft.
Addressing newsmen yesterday ahead of the event, the association’s president, Isaac Olubanjo Akerele, said the event which is to serve as a platform for Nigerian doctors across the FCT to interact, share ideas and further expand the frontiers of friendship and unity among themselves, as well as demonstrate to Nigerians and the whole world on the importance of using sports to improve their condition.
“We want to demonstrate to the whole world the important of sports in our life and how it can be used to improve our health and become a source of strength globally. “When we came on board as the executive arm of the association, we vowed to improve all our facilities with sports equipment that will keep us fit. We all know how busy and endangered Nigerian doctors are today because of social influence and insufficient doctors in our hospitals; a factor which has doubled our work. We are being over-stretched all day and have no time to relax. But, if we can fine time in between the periods and with good facilities, it will encourage us to interact among ourselves and look healthy. We can partner with anybody and the first people we partnered with was the Aso Table Tennis Club, who donated some tennis equipment to us.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is already keying into our ambition and coaches will be given to us to help facilitate our ambition. Scrabble and chess federations also gave us huge draft boards.
“Our main target is develop our football skills, so that we can compete with other professional bodies like the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN). Beyond that, our main objective is to interact socially among ourselves. We have about 13 hospitals across FCT. Through sports we can interact with ourselves and keep fit,” he said.
