The Chairman of Nigerian Medical Association, Rivers State chap-ter, Dr. Furo Green, has said his association is unhappy with the continuous abduction of his colleagues.
Speaking yesterday in his office in Port Harcourt while reacting on the abduction of two medical doctors at the weekend, Dr. Furo begged the abductors to immediately release them.
Dr. Ngorji Denton-West of West End Clinic located at Vic-toria Street, Port Harcourt was kidnapped on Sunday from his clinic. Dr. Teinye Douglas, who works with Maggie Me-morial Specialist Hospital, was kidnapped on Saturday. Dr. Douglas was abducted few days after he returned from United Kingdom. The abductors are yet to contact their various families and no ransom has been placed on them.
Dr. Furo regretted that de-spite the 21 doctors abducted last year the kidnappers still chase them around, adding that security agency and the public must come to their res-cue before the health system in Rivers State collapsed. He called on their abduc-tors to consider the kind of service being rendered by af-fected doctors and immedi-ately free them, stressing that it is a bad signal to have a so-ciety where doctors are being kidnapped for ransom.
He said: "We are not happy over what is happening to our colleagues, we have be-come a target, at the weekend two of our colleagues were kidnapped. Last year alone about 21 doctors were abduct-ed, some of them died in the hand of their abductors.
"The public must assist us, we are saying this not be cause we are peculiar or spe-cial people but because of the kind of service we rendered to the public. If you kidnap one doctor you have kid-napped 3,500 patients. This is how important we are and we must not be an endanger species."
