Scientists, Mortein Inaugurate Malaria Research

Scientists at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Yaba, in collaboration with Reckit Benckiser and the National Malaria Elimination Programme, have inaugurated a research on malaria in Kosofe Local Government area of Lagos State.

The Head of the Research Group from NIMR, Dr. Samson Awolola, who spoke at the inauguration of the ‘Mortein Own A Community Campaign,” said the scientists chose Kosofe because of its terrain, which is prone to flooding, a factor that allows mosquitoes to thrive.

Awolola said the research was aimed at presenting evidence-based studies on the impact of the implementation of malaria prevention and control strategies.

He said, “Previous surveys show that mosquitoes in this community are more active because of floods. Outdoor malaria transmission is a major challenge in the community. For this research to be successful, community empowerment into the programme is key.”

He stated that the result of the research would be disseminated by December.
