Federal government has been enjoined to put measures in place for gender equality and maternal health in its transition from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Executive director, Women Advocates’ Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) Dr Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi gave the advice yesterday during the national roundtable on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) organized by the centre in Abuja.
She said there was need for changes and adaptations in existing policy frameworks in order to support the implementation of an SDG based development agenda in Nigeria. Akiyode-Afolabi said women in Nigeria still face financial barriers, infrastructural and institutional barriers in accessing adequate maternal health care, adding that they are still being detained for inability to pay high user fees and also lose their lives trying to access maternal health care.
According to her, the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) 2014 report said that the maternal mortality rate in Nigeria is 560 deaths per 100,000 live births and onethird of all global maternal deaths are concentrated in two populous countries which includes Nigeria, after India.
