The school of health information management at the obafemi awolowo university teaching hospitals complex has held the first (1st) Induction ceremony of new members 'CLASS OF HONOURABLES' on the 14th day of May, 2016

 

At the opening remark the SUG president noted that the 'SHIM OAUTHC HALL OF FAME is a platform to celebrate great men and women with legacy, that has made tremendous and numerous impact in the profession either as a professional or well deserved dignitaries who has contributed greatly to his or her field of study in Nigeria or the world as a whole. Our mission is to ensure that Health Information Management Professionals are abreast of current and future challenges associated with managing health information assets in an era of social and mobile context. 

 

The vision of SHIM OAUTHC HALL OF FAME is to make sure Health Information Management Profession is recognized and respected in Nigeria and in Africa, with influence on health information management trends and education requirement, driving to the development, growth and ultimate recognition of Health Information Management as a professional field in various organizations globally. 

 

Successful societies and economies depend on well managed information likewise the growth of healthcare industry depends on the proper management of information by people in healthcare delivery system in order to improve individuals health, health care, public health and biomedical research, which will ultimately ensure health information is appropriately shared, exchanged and integrated while maintaining essential protection for those on whose behalf the information is held. You will all agree with me that effective Health Information Management has the power to improve lives and the society as a whole. It is also required to drive economic growth, promote transparency, accountability and good governance, as any individual, healthcare organisation or government interested in achieving any meaning development cannot afford to push aside.

 

We applaud the founding fathers of this great profession for being articulate and dogged in ensuring the growth of the profession since the civil war that took place in Nigeria and improved service delivery in every health care organisation in Nigeria even when it was difficult. It is noteworthy to acknowledge the effort of great men and women who left the shores of this country to study in the united kingdom on Health Information Management (formerly known as Health Records and Biostatistics) for more knowledge even when it was difficult and they had to sponsor the training themselves to bring this profession to Nigeria. We acknowledge the effort of all who has contributed in one way or the other for the proper establishment of this profession in Nigeria we say a big "THANK YOU" and our appreciation knows no bound. We can not imagine the state of the healthcare industry without the Health Information Management Profession in Nigeria without an iota of doubt WE ARE THE BACKBONE OF MEDICAL PRACTICE.

 

It is obvious from recent happenings in healthcare industry that Nigeria as a nation is yet to have full control over the health records and information being generated, used and transmitted by healthcare providers and government agencies, as government struggle to manage the public health and improve biomedical research. Without these controls, records are likely to be incomplete, difficult to locate and authenticated.

 

As digital information system replace paper-based systems, it is essential for healthcare organisations with the emerging disciplines in healthcare and health information system to put in place electronic health records that is capable of understanding, organizing and managing patient health information to be protected, confidential and available when its needed for the betterment of the profession and to improve the Health Information Management Standards in healthcare industry.

The Hall of Fame induct new members yearly in line with the school's yearly program tag HEALTH WEEK. The Hall of Fame foundation is to bring the great men and women of SHIM  OAUTHC product and non products to the world and to also contribute to the development of SHIM OAUTHC in terms of financial support, sponsorships and provision of job opportunities for young and vibrant graduands of the school. The Hall Of Fame comprises of both SHIM OAUTHC GRADUATES and NON GRADUATES OF SHIM OAUTHC who has contributed their quotas in one way or the other, to come together, interact and network for the betterment and growth of the profession in Nigeria. 

The entire students of SHIM OAUTHC, hereby congratulate and felicitate with our awardees, inductees having risen to the peak of their careers over years, It is thoughtful and incumbent on the current government of the students union to appreciate and give an avowal to people who have contributed immensely to the transmogrification and drastic development of our darling school and and profession as a whole.

NIGERIA. 

 

This class shall henceforth be addressed as the 'ONASANYA CLASS OF HONOURABLES' in honour of the late great hero who did all he could during his lifetime for the growth and development of this profession and has earned the honour of being called the 'FATHER OF HEALTH RECORDS PROFESSION IN NIGERIA' now 'HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT PROFESSION'. A piece of advice for the young generation 'Do that which you will be remembered and celebrated for and never relent in doing the right thing for the growth and development of the profession' as SHIM OAUTHC HALL OF FAME will never cease to celebrate great achievements of both the young and old in this profession.

 

As an inductee you are charged to carry on the good works which you have started, identified and singled out for and never relent to always contribute to the growth of SHIM OAUTHC and raise the standards of HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT PROFESSION as a whole in Nigeria. However, your various effort over the years in developing and rebranding the profession is laudable, commendable and worth celebrating.
